Money for new table.

The council have splashed out hundreds of pounds on new sports equipment.

Tring Town councillors agreed unanimously to grant 750 for a new table for Tring Table Tennis Club at a finance meeting on March 8.

The club needs the council grant to bring the table at Tring Cricket Club on London Road up to league standard.

Cllr Mike James said: "It is a very old table and new tables have got terribly expensive over the years.

"I think that would be an excellent use of our funds."

The table tennis club has not had the money available for a new table

in the cricket club, having bought new table tops for its damaged table in the Iron Rooms on Station Road, Tring.

Speaking after the meeting, Roger Hopkins, captain of one of the teams which plays in the cricket club, said: "We have been using the old table at the cricket club for some while.

"Our table at the cricket club is very old and very chipped."

The council also agreed to support the club's application to Sport England for a coaching grant, which was previously rejected because more letters of support were needed.

The grant would help to fund thousands of pounds of new tables and a coaching machine for the sessions for young people held at Tring School, Mortimer Hill, on Monday nights.

"It seems to be very well-supported. We have some quite good youngsters and want them to practise on proper, quality tables," said Mr Hopkins.

"It is important because we need to have a reasonable quality of surroundings and it is very difficult in table tennis to get that.

"We are getting a lot of interest which has surprised me.

"A couple of years ago Tring Sports Forum did a sports taster day and all the local sports clubs contributed and people could try sports and

I was a bit surprised how many people were interested."

Speaking at the finance meeting, Cllr Barry Batchelor said: "It is great to see them doing so well and young people taking up the sport."
