COLLEGE bosses have said a proposed state-of-the art campus will ensure students are fully equipped to thrive as they enter the tough job market.

Dacorum Borough Council’s full council recently gave the green light to progress with proposals for a regeneration scheme that will feature a ‘public service quarter’, a supermarket and a new college building in Hemel Hempstead.

Supermarket chain Morrisons – the enabling partner in the project – aims to build a food store on the area of land where West Herts College, built in the 1960s, currently stands. The supermarket will be flanked by the council’s ‘public service quarter’ and a college campus.

College principal Gill Worgan said: “This is a thrilling time for West Herts College. Our new campus will be home to exciting new features and many fresh opportunities for local people.

“The new, modern college building will offer far greater scope for larger, more flexible learning spaces. Each subject will have its own dedicated area and impressive facilities, with even the most straightforward classrooms fully equipped with the latest learning technology.

“All courses will focus on the modern skills people need for the future, across subjects as different as construction, enterprise, IT and commerce. This will ensure college leavers of all ages are fully equipped to thrive as they enter the jobs market at this tough time.

“The college’s ever-popular recreational courses will benefit too, with a greater mix of subjects – all taught in excellent new facilities. Access courses for adults returning to learning later in life will be similarly enhanced.

“In the meantime, it’s very much business as usual. With current students unaffected and enrolment across all courses this September.”

Further details of the plans will be made public later in the year as part of a community consultation programme.
