New recycling scheme

A new recycling scheme has been launched by the Mayor of Dacorum.

Councillor Stephen Holmes opened the initiative at Sainsbury in Apsley Mills, Hemel Hempstead.

The supermarket will be working in partnership with recycling specialist Recolight to provide low-energy lightbulbs and portable battery recycling facilities where shoppers can take their old energy-saving bulbs.

Legislation in place since February 1 states that supermarkets must provide portable battery recycling and Sainsbury is the only one to have a co-collection service available.

Deputy store manager Mark Hugh said: "We are going a step further than most retailers by offering to recycle energy-saving bulbs in addition to batteries.

"People want to recycle energy-saving light bulbs but are often unsure of where the nearest facilities are.

"We hope that this will help make a difference to recycling in the local area."
