Newton masterpiece caps huge win
A wonderful try, which came after running the entire length of the pitch, capped a massive victory for Tom Newton's Tring side.
The captain was named man of the match as the men in black and gold thrust clear of the relegation zone with the 33-15 defeat of rivals Sutton & Epsom.
Billed as a must-win game by team manager Steve Clapham, the home side were slow getting going - Newton missing two early penalties.
At the break Tring were 13-10 ahead, Tim Holgate's try, a conversion and two penalties from Newton outdoing a converted try and penalty for their visitors.
Richard Roberts stretched the home side's lead with his first of two tries four minutes into the second half.
His second was in reply to another Sutton score, and came after another Newton penalty which the man in form duly converted as well.
As the clock struck 70 the Tring skipper had his moment.
He collected the ball in his own half and weaved through the visitors' defence to dot down under the posts and make it 33-15.
The result lifts Tring seven points clear of the relegation zone, with a game at fourth-placed Bracknell this weekend.
Elsewhere at the club the IIs were 14-0 down after 10 minutes to Sutton's seconds, but came back to win 35-21.
The IIIs were beaten 22-14 by Enfield Ignations in the semi final of their Merit Cup, but the IVs beat a Saracens side 34-5 at the same stage to make it to the final of the same cup, a game which will be played at Tring on April 24.
