Pensioners want extra stops returned

Elderly residents have been struggling to use public transport since cutbacks took away their nearest bus stops.

Pensioners with walking difficulties are among those put out by the removal of two stops in Springfield Road, Berkhamsted, after Arriva's 353 service was axed in January.

Many residents have now called for the current 62 service - which goes from stops further along the road and completes a circuit to Northchurch and back - to extend its route.

Arriva spokesman Linsey Frostick said the 353 was ditched after becoming 'no longer viable on a commercial basis', after financial support was withdrawn.

"The 62 service receives some financial support from Herts County Council and they have a say in what areas are served," she added. "If residents want to approach the council we would be happy to assist in providing information that may help any decision on altering the current 62 route."

County council spokesman Pam Dajda said: "If residents feel that changes could be made to the route of the 62 bus that will encourage more people to use the service, we welcome their input.

"As this is predominantly a commercially operated route we will then work with Arriva to explore any potential changes."
