Police seek fire hoaxers

Police are investigating a hoax 999 call that claimed people were trapped in a burning building.

Firefighters raced to to reports of a house fire in Horsecroft Road, Hemel Hempstead, at around 11.15pm on Thursday, March 11.

Police were called in when no fire was discovered and the caller would not answer phone calls from the emergency services.

Superintendent Rob Henry said: "We take deliberately malicious calls to the 999 number very seriously and, if caught, someone could face up to seven years in prison for wasting police time.

"It could prevent a genuine 999 caller from getting through or divert valuable police resources from a genuine emergency incident.

"Ultimately, it could endanger someone's life."
