Police force 'one of best performing'

Herts police has been praised by inspectors as 'one of the best performing forces in the country'.

The comments came at the launch of a new 'police report card' assessment of the country's constabularies.

Zoe Billingham, Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary, said the force 'provides a consistently high standard of policing service to its local communities and enjoys some of the highest levels of public confidence and satisfaction in England and Wales'.

"Its crime rates are lower than in similar places and violent crime is among the lowest nationally.

"The Constabulary delivers good performance in reducing and solving crime."

The force has been rated a triple 'good' for local crime and policing, protection from serious harm and confidence and satisfaction.

However, the force scored a 'fair' for community presence and a 'poor' for the satisfaction of black and ethnic minority people.

Chief Constable Frank Whiteley said: "This is an excellent report that builds on many years of consistently improving performance.

"It is a tribute to the hard work and professionalism of the officers, staff, Specials and volunteers that I have the privilege to lead as well as the tremendous support we get from our county council, local authorities and other partners.

"Not least, however, it is a result of the support we enjoy from the public in Hertfordshire which we aim to repay by aiming to further improve the services we provide to them."

Stuart Nagler, chairman of Herts Police Authority, said the force provided value for money.

"The authority is delighted with these results and I would like to offer my congratulations to the chief constable and all his officers and staff," he said.

"We were also pleased that the report highlighted the value for money that the constabulary provides, and its ability to deliver high performance for relatively low cost."
