Pupils brave the cold to support sleepout cause
Students from Hemel Hempstead School took part in the DENS Sleepout, 2012.
Around 300 people including schoolchildren braved the plunging temperatures to take part in this year’s charity sleepout.
Spending a night under the stars at St Albans Abbey benefits homelessness causes like Hemel Hempstead’s DENS.
Among the rough sleepers on Friday were students from Hemel Hempstead School.
A total of 10 students armed with sleeping bags were joined by three teachers and acting head Tim Jordan for the challenge.
Teacher Jackie Ramnarine said: “It was a great experience for students and staff. We were woken up by the chimes of the Abbey bells.
“The comforting thought that a warm bed awaits came to mind and the perspective that one night of sleeping out does not come close to the horrendous reality of what it is really like for those that have to do it night after night.”
The sleepout, which is the biggest fundraising event of the year for DENS, is expected to raise up to £8,000 for the charity, which is £3,000 down on last years haul.
Carol Wolstencroft from the charity’s marketing and fundraising team said: “We were quite surprised we raised that much last year.
“It really is a very unknown quantity.”
During the night fundraisers could warm up with a hot drink in the abbey’s cafe provided by volunteers from the Mothers’ Union.
