Recycle batteries at green points

Residents are being urged to recycle unwanted batteries at special drop-off points in the borough.

In Britain just three per cent of the batteries we use are recycled with more than 600 million household batteries going to landfill each year.

Green drop-off points are being introduced across Herts throughout March. In addition to these, all large shops that sell batteries should provide recycling facilities.

County Councillor for waste Derrick Ashley said: "Batteries are made from important resources and chemicals, including lead, zinc and lithium, that can be re-used if they are recycled.

"Hertfordshire has an excellent recycling record, but it seems that batteries are slipping through the net."

There are drop-off points at Hemel Hempstead Civic Centre in Marlowes, Cupid Green Depot in Redbourn Road, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted Civic Centre in High Street, Victoria Hall in Akeman Street, Tring, Abbots Langley Parish Council in Langley Road and Sarratt Parish Council in the Village Hall, The Green, Sarratt.
