Rugby club skipper's try helps keep Herts in top county league
Tom Newton's tremendous try kickstarted a win which keeps the county side in the top division for another year.
The Tring RUFC skipper burst through early on against Devon on Saturday to touch down the first of eight tries on the day and his eighth overall for the county.
They ended up 53-21 winners to secure second place in the top tier of the RFU County Championship Bill Beaumont Cup.
Newton, 27, said: "I was happy with the try actually.
"I was about 30m out, a couple of side steps and went in under the posts."
It was a hard-earned win for Herts, who had Camelot man Aaron MacDougall on the bench and a hat-trick hero in the shape of Stevenage Town's Ian Crompton.
Full of players from National League Three and below, they put Devon, a side containing former Bath and England man Graham Dawe in their ranks, to the sword with some super running rugby.
The win ensured Herts finished behind Gloucestershire, ahead of Cornwall and Devon, who were relegated following the loss.
