Sanitation will bring new hope for children

A charity that helps impoverished children around the world aims to save thousands of lives in Uganda by improving sanitation.

Hope for Children, based in Hemel Hempstead, is spending more than £100,000 on a project that will see a slum in Namuwongo equipped with storm drains and public toilets.

It has been estimated that the improvements could reduce the infant mortality rate from 25 per cent to 10 per cent. Marketing manager Chris Lyne visited the area last month to assess the standard of living.

He said: “Income levels are very low, most households earn less than 20p per day.

“This, along with other factors, results in high levels of child mortality and chronic malnutrition.”

The charity will employ local people in the latest step of a project to turn the slum into habitable community.

Hope For Children’s Christmas concert at St John’s Church in Hemel Hempstead on Monday, December 3, will raise funds for the Namuwongo project.

There will be performances by Joyful Noise, Light Touch and Lime Walk Primary School Choir from 7.30pm.

For tickets call Hope For Children on 01442 234561.
