Security review at graveyard

Dacorum Borough Council has agreed to review security options at a cemetery after toys were stolen from children's graves.

Grieving families claim items have been pinched, moved and broken at Woodwells Cemetery's children's plot in Hemel Hempstead.

This week the council said it would 'review its options' after calls for better security or surveillance.

The Gazette's sister paper, the HeraldExpress, reported last week how 61 year old Jim Slowey said the message was 'falling on deaf ears' after finding a toy train set had vanished from his great-niece's grave.

He called for increased security measures to be put in place and, in response, the council claimed Mr Slowey was the only person to report a theft.

A rose bush planted by Vivienne Teakle, 31, at her son's grave was ripped out of the ground.

Mrs Teakle, of White Hart Drive, Hemel Hempstead, said: "It just vanished and there was nothing there but a hole in the ground."

She added: "I was so angry to read the council response that said they'd had no other reports of things being taken from graves."

Customer and community services manager Linda Smith said: "We're sorry for any distress caused because of items going missing in the cemetery.

"We're aware of the situation and will be reviewing our options."
