Shoppers need to keep on spending, says town centre chief

The chairman of Hemel Hempstead’s town centre partnership has called on shoppers to keep spending – and encourage their friends to do the same.

Vince Williams, who is also the director of the Marlowes Shopping Centre, made the appeal as another national chain announced it was in deep trouble.

Record and DVD store HMV is going into administration because it can’t keep up payments on crippling debts, even though it is trading at a profit.

The chain has nearly 240 stores, including a unit in the Riverside Shopping Centre, and a payroll of 4,200.

The news came only days after the overnight closure of the Jessops photographic chain, which also had a store in the town.

Mr Williams said this week: “We are working closely with Dacorum Borough Council to improve the shopping environment and experience in Hemel Hempstead. This will attract more retailers, shoppers and investors.

“We ask our already loyal shoppers to encourage their friends to visit the town and spend their money in our shops, that is the best way to keep our shops open.

“We have an excellent range of high street names, so keep the town alive by spending money in our shops.”

His ‘shop local’ plea was echoed by HMW spokesman Gennaro Castaldo, who said: ““If everyone were to go into our shops and spend some money it would turn the situation around completely.

“People have got to think if everyone pulled out of the high street, where would that leave us and our communities?”
