A CAMPAIGN has been launched to bring super-fast broadband to rural parts of Dacorum.

Herts County Council launched the drive this week in a bid to improve internet coverage in places that do not have access or suffer from very slow connection speeds.

Markyate and Little Gaddesden are listed among the areas that suffer from the worst service but connection speeds vary greatly from town to town and even street to street across Herts.

County councillor David Lloyd, who oversees resources and economic wellbeing, said: “The council wants to make sure residents and businesses can take full advantage of everything the internet has to offer.

“This is a great opportunity for people who are frustrated with their current internet connection to help improve the broadband speed where they live.”

The council has already secured government funding to improve broadband coverage in the worst hit areas but the pot of cash will not stretch across the whole of the county.

Householders can check their current internet connection speed and register their interest to receive superfast broadband at www.superfastforherts.org. Everyone who registers by September 1 will be entered into a free prize draw to win an iPad.

By registering, web servers are helping the council demonstrate to broadband service providers that there is a demand for superfast connectivity.

The problem of slow internet came up at a meeting of Little Gaddesden Parish Council on Monday.

Councillor David Brattle said: “My broadband is atrocious. It is right at the end of the line and it’s absolutely dire”.
