Size is no barrier for women drivers

Women drivers proved they can handle some of the roads biggest vehicles and raised thousands of pounds for charity.

A staggering 21,000 has been collected for The Fire Fighters Charity and Grove Road Hospice through the one-day driving event.

On Mothering Sunday (March 14), 135 ladies turned out to get behind the wheels of fire engines, HGVs, buses, tractors, diggers and an ambulance at Bovingdon Airfield, near Hemel Hempstead.

Regional fundraising officer for The Fire Fighters Charity Laura Harden said: "It was absolutely fantastic.

"Thank you to all of the participants for taking part and all the volunteers - they just wanted to make sure everyone had a lovely day."

The cash, raised through registration fees and sponsorship, will be split with 25 per cent going to Grove House Hospice, which helps care for patients in Dacorum, and the rest ploughed into The Fire Fighters Charity.

The good cause helps injured firefighters through three dedicated therapy centres across the UK and provides help to those facing hardship. It costs 9million pounds each year to run the charity, which receives no government funding.
