Special collars red diesel haul

Theft: A man believed to have been carrying 400 litres of red diesel in his car has been arrested.

The 20-year-old man was spotted driving in a suspicious vehicle in Flamsted on Sunday, July 22.

Special constable Richard Downs and PC Brian Evans stopped the man while they on routine patrol and arrested him on suspicion of stealing red diesel.

SC Downs, one of the force’s rural specials, said: “Red diesel theft can be a significant problem for our rural communities who use the fuel for industrial, commercial, construction and agricultural purposes.

“The misuse of red diesel is a criminal offence and anyone caught stealing the fuel can face criminal charges and fines of £500.”

The man has been bailed until September 3.
