RATES of sexually-transmitted diseases in Herts are on the increase.

Figures from the Health Protection Agency show an overall increase of one per cent across the East of England in 2011, but syphilis cases have gone up 32 per cent and gonorrhoea by 10 per cent.

The Terrence Higgins Trust says the NHS is not doing enough to tackle sexually-transmitted infections (STIs).

Victoria Gamble, the charity’s manager for the East of England, said: “These figures represent a step backwards for the nation’s sexual health.

“In the East of England, STI rates rose by one per cent last year, with a worrying increase of 32 per cent in diagnoses of syphilis.

“Young people continue to bear the brunt of sexual ill health, with four out of five chlamydia diagnoses occurring among those aged 15 to 24.

“For years we have been warning that not enough was being done to reduce STIs and this is now clearer than ever.”
