A project to resurface a stretch of towpath along the Grand Union Canal in Berkhamsted will see the popular dog-walking and visitor route closed for six weeks.

The Canal and River Trust began work on the walkway from Castle Street to the Waitrose footbridge this week, in order to make it more accessible for buggies, bicycles and wheelchairs.

The £86,000 project is being jointly funded by the trust, Herts County Council and Berkhamsted Town Council.

James Clifton of the trust said: “This stretch of towpath is extremely popular but, over the years, has suffered from wear and tear. We are delighted this improvement is going ahead.”

Town councillor David Collins said: “People value having the canal on their doorstep and with these improvements I hope more people will use these wonderfully historic routes to enjoy the outdoors.”
