A DAD who gave up his well-paid city job – and the perks that went with it – to spend more time with his family says it’s the best decision he ever made.

Daniel Langford, 39, from Bovingdon, decided to say goodbye to his company credit card, free meals, horse racing days out and Mercedes-Benz and become a plumber.

Daniel, of Ryder Close, now runs his own plumbing business, allowing him to spend more time with his two young children – Ben, aged two, and four-year-old Georgie – and wife Vicki.

He maintains that, despite enjoying the perks of his former job, it is the best decision he ever made.

Daniel said: “The trappings were nice but it’s much nicer to be able to spend time with my family.

“I only really saw them at the weekend and then you have other stuff that you have to do as well.

“I really wanted to do something closer to home and I wanted to do a job I actually liked.”

The role-swap involved changing his Mercedes for a van filled with plumbing supplies, and switching from sitting at a desk to getting hands-on with everything from leaks to new fittings.

Daniel had been unhappy in his job for some time, due to time apart from his family and his long daily commute.

“I really wanted to do something closer to home and I wanted to do a job I actually liked,” he said.

“We all get to sit down and have dinner together now and we can even go out for a meal.

“I can pick them up from nursery and have the whole evening together.

“It makes things easier on my wife, too.

“Now I feel totally relaxed and I really enjoy going to work. I’m my own boss and I really enjoy being the local village plumber!”

Daniel trained to become a plumber in his spare time while he still in his previous job, using a New Career Skills course.

Once he’d finished his course he took voluntary redundancy.

“I set up my business before I finished the course so I was all set to go,” he said.

“In the last five weeks I’ve had 100 hits on my website every week and I’ve had lots of work.”
