Transport whizz helps town

An expert on the need for better transport in the country spent time telling people how they can improve their town last Thursday.

Stephen Joseph OBE, chief executive of the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT), spent the evening at Victoria School, in Berkhamsted.

The event was hosted by two groups concerned with the environment and making Berkhamsted less dependent on fossil fuels- Transition Town Berkhamsted (TTB) and the Tring and Berkhamsted Cycle Campaign (TBCC).

CBT is a national body that researches transport issues and promotes more sustainable modes of travel.

Timothy Vaughan, of TTBC, said Mr Joseph spent the evening talking to more than 50 people about how society cannot build its way out of congestion and emphasised the importance of travel pricing.

He argued that the true cost to the economy and environment of car travel is not reflected in the cost to motorists, whereas the benefits of public transport are not recognised in the financing of major investment projects.

Ideas such as designated walking and cycling routes to schools, cash incentives to employees who do not drive to work, road speed management and residential parking zones were discussed on the night.

TTBC and TTB will now take on Mr Joseph's advice to see how it can be applied to Berkhamsted.
