Tring in Transition blog: 1/9/09

A major new campaign launched on 1st September at the Tate Modern to get Britain's carbon footprint down by 10 per cent by the end of 2010.

It is supported by major companies and celebrities –a few examples:

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Vivienne Westwood, Sara Cox, Women's Institute, Kevin McLoud, British Gas, Andrew Motion, Ocado.

You can sign up to the campaign on the website, www.1010uk.org

A great idea!

But how can we do this as individuals? Here's some ideas:

• Turn down central heating by one degree centigrade.

• Use low energy bulbs

• Drive very economically – low acceleration, less braking

• Use public transport more

• Buy local in-season vegetables and fruit

• Grow your own

• Ensure you have full insulation in your dwelling

• Waste less food – we waste 30 per cent in the UK

• Shop locally

• Cook at home from ingredients rather than ready meals

• Recycle and reuse – and use less

• Eat less meat

It will be a tough campaign leading up to (it is hoped) government action at the key global summit in Copenhagen in December.

Are you a supporter? Have you any ideas to help carbon footprint reduction? – let us know!
