Tring in Transition blog: 26/8/09

Tring Waste Disposal site.

Oh the rumours about this site!

In today's Gazette (26/8/09) a reader tells us we will be charged 5 to use the Aston Clinton waste disposal site.

Wrong – it is free.

And that the Tring site will be used for gypsies.

Wrong this has never been proposed.

You would think that people would make some attempt to check the facts before writing in.

However – the site will be empty after October. What could be done there?

It is next door to the sewage site, which makes for some interesting possibilities.

Sewage and food waste can be digested in an anaerobic digester.

This takes organic matter and digests it to produce biogas which a combined heat and power (CHP) engine is uses to convert into electricity and heat.

The site is quite small for this, but combined with the sewage site would make a viable energy generation plant.

See www.biogengreenfinch.co.uk.

The energy could be used to power Heygate's mill and nearby houses.

The locks on the Grand Union canal could also be considered for energy production.

The water draining from them could go through mini turbines to produce electricity – tests are being done elsewhere by British Waterways.

The electricity could be used to help pump the water to the canal in the first place.

We need to start thinking about fresh ways to get rid of waste products, and create alternative energy.

Could this be a start?
