‘Trucks wrecking country lane’

NEIGHBOURS say that trucks belonging to a firm hired to repair roads have “wrecked” the country lane they live in.
They say the Kiely Brothers, taken on by Herts Highways, who park their lorries in Bovingdon Airfield, cut through Upper Bourne End Lane.
Anne Bacon, 54, said: “It’s a small country lane – much too narrow for these large vehicles and they have wrecked the lane and grass verges.
“It is supposed to be a beautiful area, but now everybody is terrified of coming up here because of all the lorries.
“They have been doing it for about four weeks.”
She said the lorries begin using the lane at about 5am and are often driving up and down it until 8pm each day.
Husband David, 60, said: “It’s ironic that Herts Highways is employing this company to fix the roads.”
He said he thinks the trucks use the lane as a short-cut to the A41.
Herts Highways spokesman David Henning said: “There are no restrictions on the weight of vehicles that can use Upper Bourne End Lane.
“We have recently become aware of some issues regarding the condition of the road surface and surrounding verge.
“We will be speaking to contractors and sub contractors that use the road to see if it is possible for them to use an alternative route.
“Repairs to the road and verge are being considered but do not form part of our current works programme.”
