Veteran scores on return after four-month lay-off

Handy Andy Mullins came on for his first slice of first team action in four months and scored the last goal in Tring's 6-1 romp over Welwyn.

Out with a groin injury since mid-November, the midfield veteran returned and tucked in fellow sub Vinnie Iannone's cross against the league's bottom side to help keep Athletic in the hunt for a top-of-the-table place.

"He will be a huge player for us in the title run-in" said boss Phil Casserley. "He's not quite ready to start a game yet but he is back and that's a big boost for us."

Also back in action was top-scorer Mark Burfoot, who had been out since January with an ankle injury. He missed the chances that came his way, but Darren Franklin, his strike partner, didn't.

Franklin opened the scoring in the first half and doubled Tring's lead with a well-taken lob early in the second.

The visitors came back into it after Rob Duncan gave away a penalty, but the points were all but decided a minute later when Chris Salmon ran through and chipped in number three.

Ashley Addison made it four after coming on for Burfoot, Danny Gray added a fifth before Mullins, on for the last 10 minutes, converted Iannone's cross for a super sixth.

A welcome result after a 1-0 defeat to Harefield on Saturday, Casserley hopes to begin another winning run in a tough game at Dunstable on Saturday.

Their opponents go into the game on the back of a 1-0 win over sixth-placed Leverstock Green on Tuesday night, Dan O'Connor's late goal winning the game.
