SUMMER holidays can mean an increase in crime for schools, so police are asking people to keep their eyes open and report any suspicious behaviour.
Over the next few weeks, hundreds of schools will break up for the holidays, leaving plenty of empty buildings, which can become easy targets for thieves. But school break-ups do not necessarily mean school break-ins.
Burglaries cause real problems for schools as they are a costly inconvenience. The money needed to repair broken doors and windows or to replace stolen equipment could be put to much better use by the schools, so Herts Constabulary is urging surrounding communities to be observant. Break-ins can also mean the loss of cherished irreplaceable items.
Det Insp Paul Doran said: “If you see anyone acting suspiciously near a school then please report it as soon as you can. Your call and information could really help us in preventing a school break-in or catching the person responsible.
“Call 999 in an emergency, or 101. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
“If the crime is happening there and then, always ring 999.”
