‘We want to get yummy mummies on the air’
A community radio show is looking for yummy mummies to host weekday morning show slots.
Radio Dacorum, which was launched in March, now has 26 volunteers but just three are permanent women presenters.
Loretta Anderson from Community Action Dacorum – the good cause that runs the radio station – hopes a weekday morning slot from 10am to midday will attract stay-at-home mums.
She said: “Mums drop their kids off at school, come home and maybe start doing the housework or potter about. It would be a really nice time to have a show around schools, kids, holidays and they can bring guests in.
“Because it is five days it could even be that there are 20 of them that do it between them, or they could do it in twos.”
It is hoped that a chat show slot with mums could also get parents calling to join in with the discussion.
The online radio station, based at Grovehill Community Centre, was launched by CAD after local station Hemel FM was suddenly closed.
Volunteer station manager Matt Hatton trains newcomers, who then shadow experienced presenters before being let loose in the studio.
There are now 10,000 songs on the station’s database giving presenters a wide variety of tunes to choose from.
Their youngest presenter is 12-year-old Evan Pedlar, who does the Wednesday evening show from 5pm to 7pm, and hosted his first live interview with author Richard Mayers last week.
The station, which will cost around £7,000 to run during its first year, is attracting 10,000 website hits and around 800 unique listeners each month. Loretta said: “We are really pleased with it.”
