A Herts police scheme endorsed by dog welfare charity Dogs Trust is now being extended to cover Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

The initiative involves volunteers carrying out unannounced checks on the welfare of police dogs, in areas such as hunger, thirst, pain, injury and freedom from distress.

Police and crime commissioner for Herts David Lloyd said: “This unique arrangement will ensure dogs used in all three police force areas are healthy, happy and able to provide a good public service.”
