Women's sex health warning

Young women in Herts are most at risk of sexually-transmitted diseases, new figures reveal.

The statistics show that women aged 15 to 24 are over represented in the number of cases of chlamydia, gonorrhoea and genital warts.

Of all women diagnosed with chlamydia in 2009 across the East of England, 89 per cent - or 9,094 out of 10,185 - were under 25.

A further 67 per cent of new gonorrhoea cases and 65 per cent of genital warts cases were in women under the age of 25.

At the same time the overall number of cases of sexually-transmitted diseases is on the rise, with chlamydia increasing by 12 per cent, gonorrhoea up nine per cent, and herpes up eight per cent.

The figures have been collected from sexual health clinics by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
