A HOT racing prospect from Hemel has his sights set on a year to remember.

Up-and-coming driver Michael Epps, who lives in Trebellan Drive, Adeyfield, is aiming to compete in a British Formula Renault Championship this year.

After securing a runner-up place in the 2011 British Formula Vee Championship in only his first car racing season, Epps is looking to maintain his progression and shock the new competition.

At the end of 2011, he tested a Formula Renault BARC spec race car with Antel Motorsport – the winning team of 2011’s BARC Championship.

And he impressed the team immediately, setting lap times faster than many other competitors after only 20 laps in the car.

The Formula Renault cars are forcible beasts, taking the first corner of Silverstone Circuit flat-out at 130mph.

“It’s a brilliant piece of machinery – much quicker than the car I was racing in 2011,” said Epps.

“I felt weirdly confident and at home with the car in only a few laps and was able to push it pretty hard.

“I still had so much more pace to find at the end of the day, and yet I was worrying many of the other drivers out there already!”

Lewis Hamilton raced in this class on his way to fame in Formula 1, as did other famous names including Kimi Raikonnen, Paul di Resta and Heikki Kovaleinen.

And Antel Motorsport did in fact offer Epps a place with them in next year’s championship as a result of his impressive performance – however he could not simply accept the offer.

“The problem for us, and indeed many other racers out there, is the cost of this sport,” he said. “There is no way I could afford to race in Formula Renault on my own budget, which is why I am looking for partnerships and networking with people 24/7.”

Without funding, Epps may not be able to continue any further in his racing career even though he is certain that, given the chance, he could win the BARC Formula Renault Championship next year.

He is even confident that he could push to win the Formula Renault UK Championship, which features live on ITV4 and ITV1 alongside the British Touring Car Championship.

Therefore, Epps is hoping to attract sponsorship to help him to fulfil his lofty ambitions.

He is offering a range of sponsorship packages and anyone interested in enquiring about a partnership or a sponsorship proposal should visit www.michaelepps.co.uk
