Comrades crash out of the cup
Berkhamsted bowed out of the Herts Charity Shield at the quarter-final stage after suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of MSSML Division One side Hoddesdon Town.
Berko boss Mick Vipond made a number of changes to his starting line-up from Saturday’s win over London Tigers, and the reshuffled side got off to a bad start when they allowed former Broadwater favourite Tyler Hatherley too much room on the left wing and he crossed for skipper Steve Simmonds to give Hoddesdon the lead after 10 minutes.
Both sides played neat passing football on a frosty surface but it was Berko who dominated the second half.
Josh Chamberlain beat three men before seeing his shot saved, before Lewis Pritchard shot wide after he robbed a dithering defender as the pressure mounted.
It was Hoddesdon who scored the crucial second goal, though, when Robbie Carroll converted a cross against the run of play to double the Town lead in the 70th minute.
Myles Stephenson got on the end of a Chamberlain cross to halve the deficit, but it was not enough to prevent Berko from crashing out of the competition.
