District team delivers a successful pitch

The Dacorum District U11 football team are a good way towards raising the money they need for this season, thanks to funding from local county councillors.

Hemel Hempstead councillors Ian Reay, Ron Tindall, Terry Douris, Jan Maddern and Richard Roberts have awarded the team a total of £2,000 in grants from their locality budgets.

The Dacorum squad – run by volunteer coaches Stuart Stedman and Luke Nicholls – is made up of the 16 to 18 best footballers in the district aged between 10 and 11.

The team, selected from over 150 hopefuls at trials last year, will represent Dacorum at a district, county and possibly even national level.

Running the team, however, is an expensive task as the management team need money to pay for kit, officials, pitches and transport.

Money gets spent quickly and the team needed an extra boost as they look to achieve their ambition of a tour to Europe later in the season.

A statement from the councillors said: “Our best wishes for the team this season – take part, win but mainly enjoy your sport.

“We are delighted that Stuart Stedman and Luke Nicholls, both local teachers, have made the effort to pursue this funding and hope it helps the team move from strength to strength.

“Good luck locally or further afield on national tour. Come on Dacorum!”

A total of £10,000 is available to each of the 77 members of Hertfordshire County Council to spend on worthwhile community projects in their area.

Locality budgets were launched in July 2009, with funding to be used for worthy social, economic or environmental causes in Hertfordshire.
