Finalists Green are in it to win it

Leverstock Green 2 St Albans City 1

LEVY Green manager Steve Heath has his sights set on silverware after his team booked their place in the Herts Charity Cup final.

Green came from behind to beat St Albans City in the semis, to set up a clash with Bishop’s Stortford in the final of the competition.

“It’s a cup that we never thought we would get to the final of,” said Heath.

“We’ve taken the pressure off ourselves a little bit and we’ve got nothing to lose.

“But we will definitely be going into the final trying to win it.

“I think it is just what we needed,” he added. “The players are absolutely delighted.

“Our season looks a lot different now we are in a cup final.”

Green made a bright start to the semi-final at a freezing Pancake Lane on Tuesday night, and Junior Owusu-Akonor and Seldyn Grant both came close to opening the scoring.

The visitors also had their chances in the first half, though, and Green keeper Gareth Tinsley was forced into a good save to keep out Sean Shields.

Both sides made changes at half-time, but it was St Albans who struck first to take the lead.

While the Levy Green players appealed for what appeared to be a clear off-side, James Bent arrived to slot home and put the visitors in front.

Levy responded well, however, and laid siege on the St Albans goal in search of an equaliser.

And as the pressure mounted, Levy finally forced the breakthrough.

Grant found himself through on goal, but unselfishly played the ball to Lewis Pritchard who fired home first time.

From then on there was only going to be one winner, and Green landed the knock-out blow five minutes later.

Dan Griggs’ cross found Pritchard, and after his shot bounced back off the post, Owusu-Akonor followed up to find the net and send his team through to the final.

“It was great to see the players in the dressing room afterwards,” said Heath. “We are looking like a proper squad again.”
