Flaunden continued their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought victory over Leverstock Green Centurions in the Herts FA Sunday Senior Cup.

However, a 2-1 result was harsh on Centurions as they were the better team for most of the game.

Flaunden had goalkeeper Del Sim to thank as he pulled off numerous great saves throughout the match – and these saves were made even better when taking into account he was playing with a broken rib.

In a match where the pitch left a lot to be desired, both teams still tried to play attractive, passing football.

The deadlock was broken in the 18th minute when Tristian Dicker laid the ball off to Matt Dean; with his wand of a left foot he fired the ball into the corner of the net, giving the Green Keeper no chance.

Green went straight on the attack, with Sim forced to tip the ball over the bar magnificently from a corner.

It wasn’t long before Sim was in the action again, palming out a long range shot then showing his agility to get up and deny the Green striker on the follow-up.

Going in at half-time, Flaunden we very fortunate to find themselves 1-0 up. The consensus was the next goal in the game would be vital and that the home team needed to retain the ball more and up the tempo.

Manager Gregory’s words seemed to do the trick as, just after the hour, striker Ben Adams surged down the wing and an immaculate cross found Dicker who hit a ferocious shot into the top of the net.

This was very harsh on Green, however they didn’t let their heads go down and pulled a goal back with 15 minutes left.

From then on it was all Green pressure, but Flaunden’s defence held firm – not without the help of another couple of great saves from the athletic Sim.

The game finished 2-1 – a below par performance from the home side, but sometimes you have to win ugly.

In the next round Flaunden have a home tie against either The Boot from Baldock or AFC Letchworth.
