Boreham Wood’s reserves must be sick of the sight of Tring Athletic – for the third time in four months they have been beaten by a single goal.

And this Herts Intermediate Cup quarter final victory was all the more impressive because it was the Tring side’s first outing for six weeks.

With the first team game’s off, there was a decent crowd at Cow Lane and the reserves soon gave them something to shout about.

In the fifth minute Leo Mullet set Olly Butler free, and after he glided past the keeper he squared the ball for Ryan Caterer to smash in his eighth goal of the season.

Borehamwood bounced back but Tring held their shape and their nerve and a fascinating tactical battle ensued.

Billy Jeffrey did sterling work shackling Wood’s dangerous left winger, while Lewis Elliot and Dan Smethers snapped and harassed in midfield.

Wood were largely reduced to long range efforts, with only one decent save being forced upon Craig Garrett in theTring goal.

After physical confrontations either side of half time demonstrating the passion on the pitch, a rain storm of biblical proportions sent the two sides to the changing rooms for 10 minutes.

After the restart the intensity was just as high, but centre half pairing Dan Steadman and Ryan Cootes continued their impressive form while Caterer and Paul Jeffrey worked tirelessly at both ends of the pitch.

On 65 minutes a great move sent Jeffrey down the left, but Mullet blazed an inviting cross over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Five minutes later Ath doubled their lead with a goal of real quality. Jeffery did good work on the right, Mullet knocked it on, and Butler lobbed the onrushing keeper with precision.

Borehamwood piled on the pressure in a bid to get back into the game. Garrett made one fantastic save from close range but the visitors did pull one back, hapless marking at a corner punished as Ath conceded their first goal in 260 minutes of football.

That set up a tense final five minutes but Tring’s titans held firm.
