Tring Athletic 3 Oxhey Jets 2
Tring Athletic skipper Graham Hall bagged a brace as his side edged past Oxhey Jets at The Grass Roots Stadium.
Athletic were looking to take the game to the Jets from the off and lined up with an attacking 3-5-2 formation with Tony Fields and George Tomlin occupying the wing-back roles.
And the hosts got off to a flyer when Chris Salmon converted Hall’s corner in the sixth minute with a towering header.
Tring doubled their lead four minutes later when Hall headed home a super cross from Martin Skinner, and the visitors had a big let-off on the half hour mark.
Matt Corran’s shot from a corner was cleared off the line, then the Jets keeper made a superb save to keep out a header from Salmon and Skinner smashed the ball over the bar from close range.
Jets had enjoyed a fair amount of possession but created little in the way of scoring opportunities until 43rd minute when player-manager Wayne Gladdy turned nicely on the edge of the area and fired into the bottom corner of the net.
The visitors came out after the interval and dominated the game and it came as no surprise when they levelled the scores in the 59th minute courtesy of a deflected drive from Chris Killer.
Tring were now on the back foot but they dug deep and, in the 69th minute, the pace of Chris Vardy (pictured) was too much for Carl Wigg who grabbed his shirt as he bore down on goal.
A penalty was awarded and Hall calmly sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot to score his second goal of the game and eighth of the season.
There was still plenty of time for Jets to strike back again but the Tring defence was in no mood to concede any more goals and the hosts ran out deserved winners.
