Hardy foursome gear up for charity drive

A GROUP of golfers are set to embark on a marathon four-ball as they attempt to play four rounds at Shendish Manor in one day.

Antony Monger, Simon Johnson, Chris Carr and Jon Barkworth – who all work at The Grass Roots Group in Tring – will tackle the 72-hole feat on Sunday, June 24 to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

They will cover more than 20 miles, hit 3-400 shots, make around 1,000 practice swings and burn around 6,000 calories – more than two marathons, on average.

Anthony said: “I recently lost a family member to cancer who benefited from the amazing work of the Macmillan nurses so it’s important to me personally.

“Many of us will be affected by cancer at some point in our lives either directly or through a loved one.

“Macmillan provides a range of help to sufferers in dealing with cancer and providing support to families.

“We’re going to suffer for just one day so that Macmillan can continue to help those who suffer every day – it is a cause close to our hearts and it would mean the world if you could help support our challenge.”

The four rounds are expected to take around 16 and a half hours, with the foursome teeing-off at 5.30am.

Shendish Manor have donated green fees and will be offering moral support throughout the day – as well as providing much-needed bacon rolls.

Anthony has also asked for donations of raffle prizes from local businesses to help with the fundraising.

“The usual bits like chocolates, wine, food hampers, and gift vouchers from local pubs, restaurants and cinemas, etcetera, would all help,” said Anthony.
