The Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club men’s first team have booked their place in the last-16 of the Hockey Association Vase.

In a pulsating game played in very good spirits, Berko overcame a stubborn Blackheath side 3-0 in the third round of the competition to set up a clash with Market Harborough in February.

Alex Hardwicke, Pete Allam and James Barron got the goals.

The men were then in action again in the league on Saturday, but they were beaten 3-2 by table-topping Potters Bar, despite two goals from Allam.

The Berkhamsted ladies’ first team, meanwhile, had to come from behind in a match for the first time this season as they beat Letchworth 2-1.

Letchworth took the lead with a deflected goal, but Berko hit back with strikes from player of the match Claire Barrett Mold and Paula Wilson to earn the win.

The ladies’ second XI were also victorious, beating struggling Stevenage 2-0, while the men’s seconds saw off Luton Town 3-0.

The men’s third team lost 3-2 to Bedford Vets, while Gerry Montague’s first goal for 27 years was enough to earn the men’s fourths a 1-1 draw with Cheshunt III.

The men’s fifth team were also in action, recording a 1-1 draw with Hertford to leave them in second place in the league table.

Ed Holderness put Berko in front after half-time, but Hertford hit back to earn a share of the spoils.
