Tring stun title hopefuls

The Tring Hockey Club ladies' third team

The Tring Hockey Club men’s first XI cruised to an impressive 4-1 victory over high-flying West Hampstead on Saturday.

Second-placed West Hampstead took the lead early on, but Tring restored parity with an own-goal following a strong Charlie Nicholson hit from long range.

The scores remained tied until half-time, but Tring came out strongly in the second half and earned the win with goals from Ash Tillett and Bruce Alexander.

The men’s second XI, meanwhile, battled to a deserved 2-2 draw at Reading despite only having 10 players available.

Greg Roach and Tom Alderton got the goals for the Tring side who could have recorded an unlikely win had it not been for a late Reading equaliser.

Elsewhere, the men’s thirds were outplayed by High Wycombe and went down 5-1, while the Vets team were beaten 5-0 by Old Cranleighans.

It was better news for the ladies’ first team, however, as they beat Bishop’s Stortford 5-1.

Holly Glover opened the scoring, and Anna Henderson added her side’s second to give them a 2-1 lead at half-time.

From then on, there was only going to be one winner, and Amy Short added Tring’s third before Glover completed her hat-trick to make the final score 5-1.

In other action, the ladies’ second XI were beaten 3-1 by Broxbourne, despite an excellent Katie Haines goal, but the third team impressed in a 2-2 draw with Welwyn thanks to an Olivia Wright brace.

Sian Gill put in an excellent shift at left-back for Tring, while the tenacious Bethan Davies delivered her best performance of the season so far.
