Members of Dacorum and Tring Athletics Club have been celebrating after John Jales’ DSN Lifetime Achievement award at the Dacorum Sports Awards.

John has dedicated decades of service to the club, which has continued to flourish under his guidance as a coach.

The Road Runners section of the club had been based at Boxmoor Cricket Club, before moving to Jarman Park athletics track in Hemel Hempstead in November 2012.

“From a core group of about 20, we’ve expanded to over 60 runners of all ages and abilities in just one year – and John is the glue who holds us all together,” said club spokesman Catherine Davies.

“The club has a real family feeling about it now; not just in that we have a lot of parents who run with us while their kids train on the track in the youngsters section, but because we’re very inclusive and friendly.

“No-one ever gets left behind, and we have coaches who specialise in training mixed ability groups so that everyone gets the workout they want, to achieve their targets – whether it’s running a 2h 45m marathon, breaking 50 minutes for a 10km or running a first 5km Parkrun.

“John is at the centre of it all, with coaching wisdom, support and encouragement. He’s a star and so thoroughly deserving of this recognition.”
