TringRugby 28 Barnes 20
Tring recorded their first win of the season to stun league leaders Barnes and end their 100 per cent start to the campaign.
Tom Newton starred with the boot – landing six penalties – but it was a mammoth performance by the forwards that set the platform for a revitalised Tring side.
Tring were fast out of the blocks and opened up a 16-0 lead as Nathan Lambden and Ben Selwyn ran in tries either side of Newton’s first two penalties.
Barnes came back into the game with a try from Dom Jones and a Warren Gower penalty, but two more Newton penalties took the Tring advantage to 12 points.
Two more tries from Barnes narrowed the gap, but Newton had his kicking boots on to land two further penalties.
The Tring forwards continued to make in-roads into the Barnes defence, with Lawrence Tauasosi making strong runs to keep the hosts on the front foot.
Tring should probably have scored two more tries, but were foiled a yard from the line each time.
Barnes pressed in the final ten minutes and forced the sin binning of two Tring men, leaving the other 13 to battle it out and hang on for the win.
A last-minute defensive interception by Tring winger Johannes Rheeder ensured the points went to Tring – knocking Barnes off the top of the table and lifting Tring off the bottom.
Next up for Tring is a trip to Hertford on Saturday.
