The Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club men’s first team pulled off the great escape as they thrashed Shefford and Sandy in their last game of the season to avoid relegation.

After 14 games of the 22-game season, the Berko side were sitting in fourth place and eyeing up a promotion push.

Disaster struck, however, as an unwitting administrative mistake saw the team’s results rescinded and they were handed 5-0 defeats for all 14 games.

That left them bottom of the league and seemingly heading for relegation, but they have since gone on to win seven of their remaining eight games to avoid the drop.

They knew that only a win against Shefford and Sandy would be enough at the weekend, and they duly romped to a 6-0 victory to maintain their league status for next season.

And there was further good news for the club as the ladies’ first team confirmed their promotion with a 12-2 mauling of Rickmansworth.

Claire Barrett-Mold (4), Ellie Jones (4), Molly Beard (2), Abi Lawlor, and Steph Vere-Hodge got the goals for Berko.

Elsewhere, the men’s fifth team drew 2-2 with West Herts VII courtesy of goals from Richard Peachey and Tom Moorhouse, while the ladies’ thirds had Sophie Beard to thank for a 1-1 draw with Royston.

The men’s second and third teams both suffered defeats.
