Berkhamsted youngsters make a promising start to the new campaign

The two Berkhamsted Swimming Club teams did themselves proud in Round One of the Herts League Division One campaign.

Despite missing a large number of swimmers, Berkhamsted A came fourth in their gala, while the B team finished sixth.

There were 20 individual race PBs for the B team, plus three intermediate splits quicker than their current 50m PB and one lead-off leg PB.

Charlotte Shaw led the way for the B team with third place in the U14 100m breaststroke, slicing more than two seconds from her PB.

The coaching team’s swimmers of the night were Amy Pemberton, who lowered her PB for the 100m butterfly for the fifth time since November, and Adam Hawkswood who dropped his 100m freestyle PB and led the U14 boys’ squad with aplomb.

Other PBs went to Jenny Atwill, Stephen Burgess, Ellie Matthews, Charlie Woodmansee, Emily Hannaby, Mikey Tuirnbull-Woods, Charlie Scott, Ben Rochford, Natalia Moren, Tom Stoker, Annabel Nangle, Maya Frost, Zack Burgess, Nathan Burgess, Jason Wells, Cameron MacDonald, Luke Woodmansee and Peter Lever.

For the A team, swim of the night went to Jamie Hoyes who dropped his 100m freestyle PB time a 62-second winning PB.

Other stand-out swims came with wins for Christian Nel in the U14 butterfly, Charlotte Watson in the U14 backstroke, and the U14 boys’ squad of Hoyes, Nel, Mason Brand and Tom Weston.

PBs also went to Evie Watson, Eli MacDonald, Sam Newman, Izzie Soulsby, Ismail Rahim, Emily Kiernan, Amelie Baker, Jack Bowers, Jordan Northwood, Ellen Northwood, Charlotte Bailey and Abbie Brown,

Alice Hewson took second place in the open backstroke and there were third-placed finishes for Mason Brand, Ollie Hurst and Tom Weston, before the 8x50m squadron relay team brought down the curtain with another third place.

Remaining members of the two squads were Carly Dolman, Zach Patel, Hayley Digby, Sophie Smith, Daniel Lever, Hannah Davis, Jessica Page, Tobey Spriggs, Hannah Coulson, Holly Hannaby, Abi Hurst, Owen Strakosch, Emily Simmons, Charlotte Simmons, Tom Strakosch, Hamish MacCaig, Katie Brown, Corinne James, Jack Filer, Danny Hoyes & Jess Potts.

Berkhamsted Swimming Club head coach Geoff Wood said: “It is going to be a tough season but all the swimmers are gaining valuable experience and those who stepped in to fill the breach could not have done any more.”
