It was an excellent weekend for Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club’s top teams as they continued their impressive early season form.
The men’s and ladies’ first and second teams all sit in and around the top of their respective leagues after a flying start to the campaign.
Elsewhere, with a lot of unavailability this weekend, the lower teams struggled but still put up a gutsy fight.
In the biggest win of the weekend, Berkhamsted men’s first XI captain Pete Allam rediscovered his scoring touch to help his side to an impressive 6-2 win over high-flying Stevenage.
Berko took an early lead when Sam Philip flicked home from a saved short corner, and Duncan Hodges made it 2-1 following a Stevenage equaliser.
Again the visitors hit back, but Allam led a Berkhamsted rampage in the second half, firing in a reverse stick strike before doubling his tally from the penalty spot.
Two further goals wrapped up a good day’s work for Berko.
Meanwhile, the ladies’ first team came from 2-0 down to win in emphatic style at Shefford & Sandy.
Berko responded just before half-time as a Molly Beard converted from a short corner.
Clearly buoyed by the goal, there was no stopping Berko after the break and they earned the win with three goals in three minutes from Claire Barrett-Mold, Abi Lawlor and Harriette Holderness.
Elsewhere, the men’s second team drew 0-0 with Broxbourne, while the ladies’ twos won 3-0 against Leighton Buzzard with efforts from Stef Abson, Rachel Vickery and Paula Wilson.
It was a difficult weekend for the third teams as the men were thrashed 6-0 by Letchworth and the ladies went down 4-2 to Royston, while the men’s fours also lost to Letchworth.
