Hemel Hempstead speedster Michael Epps has made a flying start to the 2014 racing season – culminating in a second-placed overall finish at the Cooper Tires Winterfest Championship.

Along with his team-mates, Epps also helped Belardi Auto Racing to win the team championship.

A winter of tough work by Epps and the Indiana-based USF2000 team eventually paid off, but it wasn’t an easy task.

At the beginning of the Winterfest week, he and the team struggled in qualifying, only able to post a time for mid-grid starting positions in the first two races.

Despite his struggles, Epps battled to seventh place in round one, before taking third in round three for his first podium of the season and first ever in the USA.

Clearly buoyed by the result, Epps went on to record back-to-back victories in rounds four and five of the championship, before finishing second in the final race to narrowly miss out on the overall title to RC Enerson.

Despite being edged out for the Winterfest Championship, Epps was delighted with his overall result.

“Considering where we started, I think we’ve done a stellar job,” he said. “Maybe with a slightly different tactic and without the incident we could’ve won the whole thing.

“But that’s just good news for me heading into the main championship. We’ve got some of the bad things out of the way, and now we can really make a true challenge for the 2014 USF2000 honours.”
