A firefighter from Tring will swap the station for the playing field next week when she represents the British Fire Service female rugby team in their clash with the Royal Navy.

Boo Chard, who is based at Hemel Hempstead Fire Station, will head to the south coast for the match in Portsmouth on Wednesday, which is the team’s first game of the season.

Boo, 44, said: “I’ve been playing for the fire service for a while now. They started up a ladies’ side about five years ago and we play against all the other services – police, army, navy etcetera.

“It’s not part of a league – we probably play about one game a month. It’s difficult for us to get leave off so sometimes the games get cancelled if either side can’t field a team.”

There are no such problems today, though, and Chesham Rugby Club stalwart Boo will be hoping to help her side to victory with a dominant display at number 7.
