The Herts Falcons continue to hold off intense pressure from the Southampton Mustangs for the top spot in the National Baseball League.
The Mustangs extended their winning streak to 12 games on Sunday, but the Falcons took their own run to 15 straight victories. This maintains the Falcons’ one-game advantage in the standings.
The Falcons’ two wins came over the 2011 national runners-up, the Lakenheath Diamondbacks. Robbie Unsell was the star pitcher in game one’s 7-2 triumph, while Mike Osborn claimed the honours in the 17-0 game two victory.
Meanwhile, defending champions Harlow Nationals swept the London Mets to hurt the bid of the capital’s baseball team for a top-two finish and automatic qualification for the National Baseball Championship in September.
Elsewhere, the Herts Ravens battled hard against AAA South leaders the London Metros but ultimately fell in both contests.
The Herts Hawks, meanwhile, ended up with a split in their double-header with the Richmond Dragons to cement their status as a solid mid-table team.
In the A league, Herts Raptors built on their division-best record with a 30-19 victory over Guildford Mavericks II. Raptors man Ben Marques hit not one but two grand slams in the game.
Also in that division, the Herts Eagles fought valiantly in a defeat to the Essex Archers.
