Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club enjoyed another fine crop of wins at the weekend, including victories for the men’s second, third and fifth teams and the ladies’ first XI.
The most significant result came from the club’s newest team, the ladies’ thirds, who managed a draw to earn their first point of the season.
With the men’s fifth team handed a walkover win against Letchworth, it gave the men’s section a chance to blood a young sixth team who also acquitted themselves very well.
The ladies’ firsts set the tone for the day as they continued their excellent start to the season with a 2-1 win against Letchworth. Berko took the lead after 10 minutes when Harriette Holderness crossed for Claire Barrett-Mold to finish from close range, but Letchworth hit back with an equaliser against the run of play before half-time.
Berkhamsted pushed on in the second half and netted the winner as Abi Lawlor crossed for Barrett-Mold to grab her second goal of the match.
The men’s twos thrashed Potters Bar II 6-2 with goals from Oli Love, Frank Smits, Julian Laxon (2), Roger Payton and newbie Simon Royal.
Elsewhere, the men’s thirds beat Bishop’s Stortford 4-1 with goals from Tom Kemplen, Mark Robinson (2) and Paul Dubenski, while Beckey Wighton’s goal was enough to earn the ladies’ third team a 1-1 draw with Hertford.
It was not such a good day for the men’s first XI and fourth XI, however, as they were both beaten heavily in their clashes with Hertford.
