Hemel Hempstead gymnastics star Max Whitlock has his sights set on a fistful of medals as he prepares to represent England at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Max, 21, won two silvers and a bronze at the 2010 Commonwealths in Delhi, and the double Olympic medallist is aiming to better that this time around.

“Last time I got three medals and if I can top that then I would be very pleased,” said Max. “Preparations have been going really well and that is key as it can give you the confidence you need going into these big competitions.”

Max says he is going to showcase a few new tricks in Glasgow, and is relishing the opportunity to test himself against his Great Britain team-mates.

“I’m hoping to show a few new moves,” he said. “I’ve been working hard on some new things, especially on the vault. I’ve added in an extra element which would bring the start score up quite a lot.

“It will be strange going up against the Scottish guys that I have been training with and competing with for a long time, but I think there will still be a sort of team spirit amongst us.

“It’s going to be tight between England and Scotland – they have got some very good gymnasts and it will be a case of who delivers on the day.”

Although Max says that it will be impossible to top the feeling of competing at London 2012, he is predicting an electric atmosphere in Glasgow when competition gets under way at the start of next week.

“It’s almost like being in a home Games again and hopefully we will get the support of the crowd like we did at the Olympics,” said Max. “I hope the atmosphere will be similar to London 2012 but I don’t think anything can top that.

“Hopefully we can just go out there and enjoy it. I’m really looking forward to it.”
