Hemel Hempstead gymnast Max Whitlock set a new personal best score on the pommel horse as he successfully defended his English Championship title in Wigan.

A pommel score of 16.10 helped Max to a total of 88.65 – handing him victory over fellow Team GB gymnasts Kristian Thomas and Sam Oldham, who scored 87.95 and 84.90 respectively.

After the event, Max tweeted: “Very happy with the competition today at the English Championships – pleased as I went for some new skills and I got a personal best on pommel.”

The competition signalled the start of a busy year for Max, and he will look to defend his title at the British Championships in two weeks, before heading to the European Championships at the start of summer.

“The more competitions the better for me,” said Max. “It gives me more experience and I can try to perfect my routines.”

In total, Max came away from Wigan with wins on the floor and pommel and second on the parallel bars, as well as his overall victory.
