The Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club men’s first team have promotion in their sights after seeing off West Herts at the weekend.
Berko’s win – along with other promotion hopefuls dropping points – put them up to second place in the table with just three games left to play.
Elsewhere, there were big wins for the already promoted men’s second team, as well as the men’s thirds and the ladies’ firsts.
A young men’s fourth team lost out narrowly to runaway league leaders Broxbourne, while the men’s fifths and ladies’ thirds also had close defeats.
The main disappointment came for the ladies’ second team whose promotion challenge faded at Saffron Walden.
Elsewhere, Berko hosted U14s boys’ and girls’ tournaments which proved to be a big hit with all the teams who entered.
The ladies first XI were in no mood to hang around in their clash with Hertford and raced into a 3-0 lead after just seven minutes.
Molly Beard set up the opener for Harriette Holderness and then also fed Abi Lawlor to make it 2-0.
Beard added a goal herself to make it 3-0, before Andrea Betteridge and Hannah Prentice completed the rout.
The men’s first maintained their unbeaten run to close in on promotion but had to wait until the second half to get their three goals against West Herts.
Tom Vila popped up at the far post to scoop home 15 minutes after the break, before James Barron and Pete Allam made sure of the points.
The men’s seconds went goal crazy at Stevenage as a hat-trick from Roger Payton, two goals from Paul Whitby and a strike from Jack Graham secured a 6-0 triumph, while Oli Bowman hit four for the thirds in their 8-0 romp against Southgate Adelaide.
The ladies’ seconds were disappointed to lose out 3-1 at Saffron Walden, but the U14 boys beat Tring, West Herts and the Berko B Team in Sunday’s tournament.
